At Wildly Rooted Counseling LLC, our team of licensed therapists have years of experience helping individuals and families navigate life's challenges. We specialize in a wide range of areas, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues.
We offer a variety of evidence-based counseling services, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, EMDR, art and play therapy. We also offer specialized services for children and adolescents, as well as support for LGBTQ+ individuals and families.
Our approach to therapy is rooted in empathy, compassion, and non-judgment. We strive to create a safe and supportive environment where our clients feel comfortable exploring their thoughts and feelings, and where they can develop the skills and tools they need to thrive.
Kate Bowman is the owner of Wildly Rooted Counseling; founded in November 2021. She is a local who graduated from Roanoke College with her degree in Psychology (concentration in health care) and then from EMU with her master's in counseling. She has a passion for serving others and this community. She has background experience with children and families, and has previous experience with children in foster care. as she was a foster care social worker for nearly seven years. She also worked in the schools for several years as a Therapeutic Day Treatment counselor. During her practicum, internship and part of her residency she worked as an outpatient counselor as well as an intensive in-home worker. Kate is an expert in trauma and trained in EMDR. She is passionate about helping others in their journey to healing and learning to find healthy coping skills to manage the chaos of life.
Sarah Morris is the office manager at Wildly Rooted Counseling. She has past experience in billing and coordination of care. She is the billing expert at the office and handles all new client referrals, billing and insurance needs as well as a myriad of other tasks. Sarah is a born and raised local but thoroughly enjoys her time at the beach. Sarah has two kids and occasionally they make appearances in the office!
Ravyn graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with her MA in Counseling in May 2024. After starting at Wildly Rooted Counseling as an intern in June of 2023, she is now a Resident in Counseling at the practice. A local of Harrisonburg, Ravyn is drawn to continuing to serve this tight-knit community and committed to fostering an environment of growth and authenticity at WRC. She enjoys working with various populations, but is particularly interested in working with adolescents/young adults, couples/families, depression/anxiety, trauma, and LGBTQ+ communities. Ravyn takes a person-centered approach to counseling and is excited to get to know all the unique aspects of your story! In her spare time she loves to cook, get into tv shows, podcasts, and books, and go on walks with her dog, Fitz!
Jessica Buckwalter is a Resident in Counseling who earned her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Eastern Mennonite University. She has prior experience in various settings in Virginia including schools, nonprofit organizations, and private practice. She has experience with children, adolescents, and adults. Jessica serves from a person-centered and solution-focused approach with the belief that each person has the innate ability to move towards growth. Jessica strives to provide an environment where all feel accepted and understood. Jessica enjoys hiking, reading, and spending time with friends.
Karen is joining the Wildly Rooted Counseling team as an intern; she just finished her second year at EMU in the Master
of Arts in Counseling Program. Karen is passionate about working with children, adolescents and adults, especially dealing with anxiety, depression, grief and both planned and unplanned transitions in life. She has experience in using mindfulness, play and sand therapy as well as expressive arts. Karen grew up in rural PA enjoying farm life, fishing and the outdoors. She moved here in 1987 and has enjoyed making the Shenandoah Valley her home. She looks forward to working with you through a compassion-focused and person-centered lens.
Sarah Layman is in her third year of the dual masters degree program of counseling and divinity at Eastern Mennonite University and has recently completed her counseling practicum at Bridgewater Retirement Community. She has experience with children from birth to 11 years of age. Sarah has a passion for working with individuals and families to help them discover the best versions of themselves. She is interested in working with individuals with religious trauma. Additionally, Sarah is passionate in working with individuals with third culture experiences as she herself grew up in the host country of China. Sarah enjoys reading, knitting, and being in the mountains in her spare time.
Rebekah Martin, is a resident in counseling who received her B.S. in Psychology at James Madison University, and completed her Master's of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Eastern Mennonite University. She is dedicated to providing a compassionate, welcoming, and non-judgemental environment where clients feel empowered to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. She is also dedicated to providing affirming and inclusive therapy to individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. Rebekah works from a humanistic, person-centered, theoretical approach, working collaboratively with individuals to address a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, anger management, sexual abuse, and trauma. She has experience working mainly with children, adolescents, and young adults, but looks forward to working with individuals of all ages and backgrounds, wherever they are in their journey of life. In her free time, she likes playing with her cat Bear, drawing, and getting outside.
Kate Bailey is a resident in counseling who received her Master's of Arts and Educational Specialist degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at James Madison University. She is committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space for clients to feel heard, seen, and empowered through their therapeutic journey. Kate has worked with clients of all ages and backgrounds, and especially loves working with teens and adults. She is dedicated to providing affirming and inclusive therapy to individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community. In her spare time, Kate enjoys being outside, knitting, drawing, and reading.
Katie (she/her) is from Harrisonburg, VA, and is an intern at Wildly Rooted Counseling, LLC. In 2021, she graduated from JMU, where she studied Psychology & Sociology. She is now in her third year of her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at EMU. Katie works primarily from a person centered perspective, with threads of constructivist, systems, and attachment theories woven in. She has experience with a wide range of populations, ages, and difficulties. Katie is committed to providing a non-judgemental, collaborative, and compassionate space where clients feel safe to show up authentically and empowered to recognize resilience within themselves. In her free time, you’re likely to find Katie reading or tending to plants in her garden. She is excited to work with you!
Erica is a born-and-raised Virginian and a third-year student at Eastern Mennonite University where she is completing her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She is passionate about making mental health accessible to all in the community and has experience working with low-income and marginalized populations. She has worked with children, teens, adults, and elders, as well as group settings ranging from middle schools to the Department of Corrections. During her time as a student, she has had the opportunity to work with those who hold offenses of domestic violence as well as victims of domestic violence. Additionally, Erica holds special interest in parent/child relationships, depression and anxiety, family systems/dynamics, grief and loss, sexual, religious, systemic and racial trauma, and sexuality. She is very intentional about cultural humility and strives to make the therapeutic space a safe and restful environment for those she works with. When not in school or at WRC, Erica is with her three-year-old playing outside, enjoying the mountains or lake in her canoe, or picking tomatoes out of her garden. She also doesn't mind a nice book and blanket on the couch after a long day!
John Leonard (he/him) is a Resident in Counseling who received a Masters of Counseling degree in May of 2024 from Eastern Mennonite University. John has experience with clients of all ages, from children to retirement. He has worked with a myriad of issues, including transitions, depression, anger management, trauma, and anxiety. He has specific interests and experience in adoption issues and the LGBTQIA+ community. He uses a person-centered approach in his sessions and is committed to creating a welcoming, positive, empathetic, and safe space to walk alongside clients in their journey of life. John believes that everyone can make positive changes given the right environment. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, writing, walking his dog Utley, and watching way too much baseball.
